Fawnid Age-Ups & Re-References

This page consolidates the process and requirements for aging up a fawn and for creating a new reference (re-reference) for an existing Faunid. They are similar processes with similar requirements. If you have questions, feel free to ask in the discord.

Both actions can be done by the owner or a commissioned artist, and both require a submission with the form below for staff review.

Fees, where applicable, support site costs; gifts/event wins may waive them.

What You Can Do

  • Age-Up: Create the grown version of your fawn (yourself or via a commissioned artist), then submit for approval.
  • Re-Reference: Produce a clean, flat-colored, color-pickable reference for an existing Faunid that respects the original design limits, then submit for approval.

Fees & Tokens

  • Age-Up Fee: $30 (USD). May be waived for gifts/event wins.
  • Re-Reference Fee: $30 (USD) plus a valid Re-Reference Token.
  • 2019 Exemption: Faunids created in 2019 do not require a re-reference token (standard approval/fees still apply).
  • When to pay: After staff approve your draft; fees support site costs.
  • Commission costs: Any artist commission fees are separate from site fees.

Guidelines (Age-Ups & Re-References)

  • Required contents: A flat color front view, a listed trait section, and a color palette.
  • How to produce: You may use an approved base, draw your own, or commission an artist.
  • Official status: A submission becomes “official” only after staff approval and after the fee is sent.
  • Critique: All submissions are subject to constructive critique and may require edits.
  • Ownership: The user submitting must own the fawn/Faunid (owner must be the poster).
  • Checklist: Please review the Final Checklist at the bottom before posting.
  • Staff thread: Upon submission, staff will open a 1v1 thread to discuss any edits and confirm payment.
  • Approval is not guaranteed until criteria is met. No payment will be taken prior to approval.

Submission: How It Works

  1. Create the art (age-up or re-reference). You or a commissioned artist may do it.
  2. Post in the discord with the filled form (template below). The owner must be the poster. Staff will follow up with a 1v1 thread for edits/payment confirmation.

Reference Requirements

  • Minimum views: a clear front view. (Back/clothing/props allowed but optional.) No shading. Keep the sheet flat color and color-pickable.
  • Marking fidelity: Markings stay similar in proportion and shape to the original fawn/adult. Minor soften/sharpen OK.
  • Line & fill quality: Color stays inside the lines; avoid heavy texture unless present on the original.
  • Graphic design on the sheet: Include palette and traits; ≤2 fonts; readable text; simple layouts are best.

Anatomy / Stylization

Your faun is not required to be in “faunid style” but must still be recognizable as its deer species.

Antlers must be based in realism. Stylization must not create faux traits.

Allowed

  • “Chibi” and “cutesy” style (still recognizable as a deer species)
  • Drawn realism
  • Stylized semi-realism
  • Moderate stylization where the deer species can be identified
Acceptable stylization examples

Not Allowed

  • Styles based on mainstream media (MLP, Lion King, etc.)
  • Overly stylized anatomy that is no longer recognizable
  • Anatomy that doesn’t make sense to the species
  • Stylization that creates “faux traits” via exaggeration
Unacceptable stylization examples

Lineart

Lineart must be visible, non-obtrusive, opaque, and clean.

No broken/sketchy lines; construction lines should not be visible.

Lineart — Good

  • Textured lineart but still clean
  • Minor shading and solid linework, non-obtrusive to the design
  • Thin lineart that is visible
  • Weighted lineart that never breaks
Good lineart examples

Lineart — Avoid

  • Construction lines visible
  • Heavy lineart obscuring the design
  • Broken / non-continuous lineart
  • “Sketchy” / “scratchy” lineart
Avoid lineart examples

Tangents

Tangents occur when two lines, edges, or elements touch in a way that confuses visual hierarchy or flattens your design.

Avoid These Common Tangents

  • Edge Tangents: Two shapes/lines just barely touch without overlap, creating a false connection or visual vibration.
  • Corner Tangents: Two corners/points meet at the exact same spot, flattening depth.
  • Contour Tangents: Lineart hugs a nearby edge too closely so elements merge visually instead of separating clearly.

In general, overlap or separate forms by a clear margin. Spacing, clean overlaps, and line hierarchy prevent tangents and keep designs readable.

Coloring & Markings

Flat, color-pickable references only.

Keep color inside the lines.

Markings should remain similar in proportion and shape to the original; replicate the original marking style (you can soften or sharpen thoughtfully).

The below resource does not cover all applicable variables.
‍Please contact MUTT for any further concerns.

Tips for success

  • Replicating the marking style.
  • You can soften some markings.
  • You can sharpen some markings.
  • You can soften and sharpen some markings.

Be Mindful

  • Markings should not be drawn with an overly textured brush unless it was also done on the fawn originally.
  • Color must remain inside the lines.
  • Markings must be similar in proportion and shape to that of the fawn.
  • The entirety of the reference should be flat color and "color pickable".

Color Adjustment Guidelines

Adjustments must keep the design recognizable and color-pickable. Stay in the same color family and preserve the design’s value hierarchy.

Allowed Adjustments

  • Saturation can be slightly adjusted.
  • Can be shifted to a more vibrant/brighter version of that color.
  • Slight hue shifting is allowed within the color “family”.
  • Can be a darker value/brightness.
Allowed color adjustments

Not Allowed Adjustments

  • You cannot drastically de/saturate a color or vice versa.
  • The color must remain the same color. In this case, yellow.
  • Additional colors cannot be added.
  • While in the same “family”, this is too far from the original brightness.
Not allowed color adjustments

shape Adjustment Guidelines

The aged faunid must have (at minimum) remnants of the original design’s marking.
Any changes must still adhere to the basic shape design of the original. The "ghost" of the original marking can be seen below as reference.
You may be asked to revert "legal" changes if we feel your alteration does not benefit the original design.

Allowed Adjustments

  • Sections(<50%) can be faded or removed.
  • Additional markings can be added but should not be major.
  • Another example of additional markings/marking extension.
  • Another example of subtle fading of the marking

Not Allowed Adjustments

  • Extensive marking additions not permitted even if it is following other patterns.
  • Read Above.
  • Unwarranted and foreign designs to the original are not allowed.
  • Complete removal is not allowed.

Graphic Design on the Sheet

  • Place the palette and traits on the image
  • Use ≤ 2 fonts
  • Ensure readability/contrast for all text
  • Simpler is better if you’re new to layout
  • You are not required to have a transparent reference
  • Trait lists and supplemental info do not need to be big — small but readable is best
  • When adding color shapes behind the image, pick colors that complement or reflect the design

Common Trait Limits

These are known limits for traits. Other traits may have limits that have not been outwardly listed. Be mindful that this list is not all encompassing.

Hair

Hair example
Hair cannot extend beyond the hooves/height of the faunid.
There must be noticeable hair/fluff on the head.

Kirin Tail

Kirin tail example

Hair/feathers cannot exceed 1.5x the length of the tail itself.
There must be a noticeable tuft of hair/feathers present at the tip of the tail.

Fluff

Fluff length example 1

Fluff (cont.)

Fluff length example 2
Not all fluff traits are shown here and is just an example with the most common traits.
Different traits will have different allowed lengths dependent on the area.

Fluff cannot be so long that it would realistically sag down like a mane.*
There must be noticeable extra fur at the targeted area.
*  - Exclusions to this rule: Heel fluff, Elbow Fluff dorsal mane

Bison Fluff

Bison fluff zones 1

Bison Fluff (cont.)

Bison fluff zones 2
